Downtown Las Vegas (commonly abbreviated as DTLV) is the central business district and historic center of Las VegasNevada. It is the original townsite and was the gambling district of Las Vegas prior to the Strip, and the area still incorporates downtown gaming. As the urban core of the Las Vegas Valley, it features a variety of hotel and business highrises, cultural centers, historical buildings and government institutions, as well as residential and retail developments. Downtown is located in the center of the Las Vegas Valley and just north of the Las Vegas Strip, centered on Fremont Street, the Fremont Street Experience and Fremont East. The city defines the area as bounded by I-15 on the west, Washington Avenue on the north, Maryland Parkway on the east and Sahara Avenue on the south.

History Of Downtown Las Vegas

Before incorporation

Perhaps the earliest visitors to the Las Vegas area were nomadic Paleo-Indians, who traveled to the area 10,000 years ago, leaving behind petroglyphsAnasazi and Paiute tribes came here at least 2,000 years ago.

The area was named Las Vegas, which is Spanish for the meadows, in the 1800s because it featured abundant wild grasses, as well as desert spring waters for westward travelers.

The year 1844 marked the arrival of John C. Frémont, whose writings helped lure pioneers to the area. Downtown Las Vegas’ Fremont Street is named after him.

Eleven years later, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chose Las Vegas as the site to build a fort halfway between Salt Lake City and Los Angeles, where they would travel to gather supplies. The fort was abandoned several years afterward. The remainder of this fort can still be seen at the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Washington Avenue at the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Historic Park.

Incorporation and growth

Las Vegas was founded as a city in 1905, when 110 acres of land adjacent to the Union Pacific Railroad tracks were auctioned in what would become the downtown area. The first hotel in the area, the Hotel Nevada, was built in 1906; it is still operating as the Golden Gate Hotel and Casino.[2][3] In 1911, Las Vegas was incorporated as a city.

The year 1931 was a pivotal one for Las Vegas. At that time, Nevada legalized casino gambling and reduced residency requirements for divorce to six weeks. This year also witnessed the beginning of construction on nearby Hoover Dam. The influx of construction workers and their families helped Las Vegas avoid economic calamity during the Great Depression. It was completed in 1935.

Food Bars & Maps

Food in Las Vegas is not hard to come by. Walk around the strip and you’ll find any kind of food from all around the world. But, even with such a vast variety, only one place offers an experience like no other: Oscar’s Steakhouse .

Oscar’s Steakhouse serves its customers steak…. but that is not what separates it from any other steakhouse. Oscar’s is located inside an old fallout shelter, so it has a very different feel to it. When you first walk down the stairs and see the big concrete walls surrounding you, some people may be creeped out by it, but those who have been there more than once tell a different story: they are hooked after their first visit.

Oscar’s has a very exclusive feel to it. It only accommodates 20 people, so you will never have to wait more than 5 minutes if they are not full. In order for customers to be considered, there is a long list on the wall that customers must add their name onto once they have been. During this time, customers may drink free wine while they wait to be seated.

Winchell’s

This is not the only restaurant that stands out on the strip, though. Winchell’s has one of the biggest Donut selections in Las Vegas. The shop is located near UNLV on Maryland Parkway and it offers 50 different kinds of doughnuts at any given time. After you decide on what kind you want, choose from a variety of toppings to add on top of it, including cereal or even crushed Oreos. When you are done getting your doughnut fix at Winchell’s, continue your day by walking around the UNLV campus, sit in an outdoor cafe downtown, go shopping at The Grand Canal Shoppes , or head over to the Vegas Golden Knights T-Mobile arena

Donut Bar

In a different location from Winchell’s, you can find Donut Bar . This doughnut shop opened in Downtown Las Vegas and offers a lot of unusual varieties of doughnuts that will only be found there. It also lets customers build their own doughnuts with a variety of toppings/fills to give them the best experience possible. After this, you can head over to the Mob Museum , take part in some downtown activities, get involved with local events, or just walk around and see what people are up to.

Freedom Beat

If you’re looking for a way to enjoy your time off on Fremont Street , then Freedom Beat is the place for you. It’s located right on Fremont Street and is one of the most modern bars downtown. They offer a wide variety of beers, wine, and cocktails with unique names like “The Dildo” (a type of spiced rum). Once you try some of their drinks they might not be what you expected but they are unique and amazing. After this bar experience, you can continue down the Fremont Street Experience , take a ride on the Slotzilla Zipline , or watch some of the most talented street performers in all of Las Vegas.

Nacho Daddy – Downtown

Another restaurant located downtown with an experience like none other is Nacho Daddy . Not only does it have amazing nachos, but they also have a big variety of drinks that will satisfy any customer. Their nachos are one of a kind and their margaritas come in every flavor from raspberry to mango habanero. For you, this means trying out all the different flavors until you find your favorite drink. After this place, go walk around Fremont Street , visit Container Park , go shopping at the Fashion Show Mall , or hit up some of the downtown events.

The Smashed Pig

Just as good as Nacho Daddy’s drinks are, so too is The Smashed Pig ‘s beer selection. This bar offers more than 400 different beers for customers to choose from and always has a food truck outside. If you’re a craft beer fan, this bar might be the perfect place to go. It also has a unique atmosphere that sets it apart from other bars downtown. After your trip here, keep going down Fremont Street , visit Mob Museum , get involved with local events, or continue shopping at the Fashion Show Mall .
